Looks Like I’ll Be Seeing Jump Ropes In My Dreams Tonight

Well, it took me more than a few tries but I finally managed to obtain the “Jump Rope Genius” power moon in Super Mario Odyssey. I know that probably won’t mean much to most people, but it’s probably one of the hardest moons to get in the whole game, as you have to jump 100 times before you receive your reward, which sounds simple on paper as jumping is pretty much second nature to Mario, but it is tough as nails for several reasons. For one, the rope spins faster with every five jumps (at least up until jump 50 where it remains at a steady speed but by that point, the rope is going faster than the speed of light so it doesn’t really matter) and there’s no room for error either. You have to be absolutely fucking pixel perfect with timing your jumps, which can be incredibly frustrating if you’ve already made 90 jumps but then you stop for a split second and… oops, you missed. Looks like you’re gonna have to try again.

Ah, well. I managed to finally beat it and I, for one, couldn’t be happier. I don’t consider myself to be a good gamer by any stretch, but man, being able to pull off this particular mini-game is so goddamn satisfying and it’s weirdly fun in its own way. I love when I manage to jump almost in tandem with the rope. It’s kind of like a rhythm game… an extremely difficult rhythm game with no wriggle room, but still, it’s rhythmic.

Maybe now, I can start adding some of the many, MANY photos I’ve taken while playing Super Mario Odyssey.

Watch this space.
