Predator: Badlands
I finally got around to seeing Predator: Badlands yesterday.
All things considered, I thought it was a lot of fun. It’s definitely an interesting change of pace for the franchise as it largely de-emphasises the horror of the series, but it still has some of that subversive spirit that makes for a good Predator movie with this film spinning the Predator formula entirely on its head and making the hunter the hunted. It’s something that could’ve very easily backfired, but by focusing on a Predator who’s been designated the runt of the litter, it doesn’t dilute or soften the Predator species like a lesser film would’ve. I love the unconventional buddy picture approach it takes with the Predator having to team up with a dismembered android as they navigate the treacherous planet of Genna, and I also have to give plenty of praise to the two leads. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi is fantastic as the main Predator and Elle Fanning is a delight as his android companion. They both have great chemistry together and I loved their on-screen interactions.
Not gonna lie, though. It was definitely strange seeing a Predator movie with a 12A rating. Even more so when it still has got plenty of dismemberment, decapitations and alien gore. I guess you can get away with that in a movie that doesn’t have any humans. Also, Alan Silvestri’s theme is entirely absent, which may disappoint some fans. I really love his work on the Predator movies, so… yeah, I was a little disappointed on that front. Regardless, it is still an enjoyable addition to the Predator franchise. It doesn’t quite top the original or Prey, but it is a blast and I’d say it’s worth watching if you’re a fan of the series.
Man, it really feels like Alien and Predator fans are eating good right now. Not complaining about that by any means.
