Let It Rain
The rain’s finally made its overdue return to these shores after three weeks of heat and sunshine.
In one of my previous blournal entries, I wrote about the ‘scairbhín’, that period of Spring where the weather reverts to wintry conditions for a brief period of time. At the time, I wasn’t expecting the onslaught of heat until the end of May, but we’ve had warm weather all month and it’s been absolutely lovely. I’m pretty sure this isn’t gonna the end of the good weather as it’s still not officially summer yet, but to quote Outkast: “You can plan a pretty picnic but you can’t predict the weather.”
OK, so I’m not supposed to just comment on the weather. What else has been going on? Well… I went to see the Bardic Theatre’s production of the American Idiot musical last Saturday night and I fucking loved it. I loved the music, the performances and the overall presentation perfectly embodies the righteous spirit of its album counterpart. It reminded me why I still love the original album. Personally, Dookie is still my personal favourite Green Day album, but listening to American Idiot again, it is considerably more timeless than Dookie and the songs still slap. This album may be etched firmly in the zeitgeist of the Bush era, but its themes and subject matter are still every bit as relevant even twenty plus years later — something which the Bardic production acknowledges and even leans into. Sadly, Saturday was the final performance, because otherwise, I would’ve strongly recommended it, and I’m not just saying that because I’m a huge Green Day fan (which I am… just laying my biases out there). It’s a great musical and I’m so happy to see local talent getting an opportunity to show what they’re capable of.
In more uninteresting news, I ordered a stand for my acoustic guitar. Now to get myself a tuner and look about finally fixing up the electric guitar.
