New Years’ Resolutions

Not gonna lie, it has been extremely difficult trying to come up with resolutions for this year given… everything that’s been going on in the world over the last couple of weeks. To be fair, January is usually a slow month and I never go into the start of a year with any major expectations, so I probably shouldn’t be so critical of myself, but… obviously, that’s never stopped me before.

I’ve already mentioned a few general goals for 2026 in some of my previous blournal entries… spend less time doomscrolling, watch more movies, read more books, play more video games, get around to watching shows that I’ve never seen before, spending more time with friends… and so far, I’ve been pretty hit-and-miss with accomplishing these things. Like I said, January is usually a slow month for me so I won’t beat myself up too much, but I think I’m taking a few steps in the right direction. I’ve started reading again, I’ve been going to bed earlier during the week, I’ve been making more use of my proper camera instead of my phone and I’m still going to the gym three days a week. All good steps but there’s room for improvement. For one, I still haven’t got out to the cinema yet this year, which is not good by my standards. There’s so many films out now that I’ve already mentioned… as well as a few new releases including Primate and the new 28 Years Later, which I’m hearing great things about. I really enjoyed 28 Years Later even if its ending was an absolutely fucking bizarre bit of sequel bait. It was definitely a weird way to wrap up a movie that was otherwise incredibly poignant and atmospheric, but at the same time, I’m intrigued as hell to see how The Bone Temple follows on from that.

So… other resolutions for 2026 in no particular order…

Write a script… maybe more than one, if possible.
Go to more concerts… preferably ones that aren’t arena or stadium shows.
Live long enough to see The Odyssey and Dune: Part Three in IMAX.
Learn a new skill… maybe learn more additional skills while I’m at it.
Help my friends out.
Help my family out.
Watch more movies.
Listen to more music.
Listen to more podcasts.
Play more video games.
Play more retro games… although I guess that depends on what your idea of retro is.
Be more sociable/have as much craic as possible.
Get good at playing guitar.
Get better at photography.
Explore more of Ireland… and maybe more of the world, while I’m at it.
Be more positive and hopeful.
Make improvements to the website.
Keep more in contact with my long-distance friends.
Experiment with my hair.

That’s all I can think of for resolutions at the time of this writing. I might come up with more as the year goes on — it’s still January after all — but I think these are a good place to start.
