This Weekend
It’s been a pretty busy weekend for me, which I already alluded to in a previous blournal post.
Yesterday, I saw Conor McPherson’s The Weir at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin and it is a strange play… definitely a hard one to explain the appeal of because on paper, it sounds so boring and mundane. It’s set in a bar and mostly consists of five people sitting around talking and sharing stories often with a supernatural element. There’s not really much of a plot per se and it doesn’t really build up to anything, but it’s strangely enthralling nevertheless. I’m still thinking about it even now when I’m writing and I’m supposed to be heading out to the pub myself.
Today, I went and saw Jaws at the QFT and look… I’ve watched it a million times. I think it’s an excellent film. The direction, the music, the performances, the characters and the setting are all top-notch. Spielberg made one hell of an impression with this film and he was only in his late twenties at the time. Watching this film on the big screen was such a fun experience. In particular, I got a great thrill out of seeing the audience react to that sunken boat scene and Robert Shaw’s monologue about the USS Indianapolis is so riveting. At the end of the day, Jaws is pure popcorn entertainment but it’s very good popcorn entertainment and it is well worth seeing on the big screen.
I also tried to get a photo of tonight’s eclipse but that amounted to nothing so uh… here’s another shot of the field from behind my house.
See you around.
